About Us
The village: La Juncosa de Montmell
Cal Guixater is located in La Juncosa de Montmell, a small, quiet village with just over a hundred inhabitants (123 in 2023). The village has a beautiful historic centre and is situated at 430 metres altitude in a mountainous area with many forests and walking trails.
The rural surroundings, vineyards, olive and almond groves, and mild climate attract people looking for peace, nature and an alternative lifestyle. The municipality in which the village is located, El Montmell, has grown (30% since 2013) unlike other rural municipalities, which testifies to the appeal of this area.
In La Juncosa, the main village of the municipality, you will find the town hall, a primary school, sports fields, a public swimming pool (open in summer), a pharmacy, a doctor's surgery and a bar serving good coffee and tapas. Everything needed for a comfortable stay and an authentic village experience.
History
The first written record of the area dates from 1011 and mentions 'the Font of La Juncosa'. This suggests that a settlement must have existed there at that time.
In the past, people lived off the land and what nature provided — grapes, grain, almonds, olives, goats, sheep, pigs and chickens. Typical of inland Catalonia was a mix of farming, livestock keeping and forestry. For heavy work, they used working donkeys, the strong Burro Català. Trades of that era included: shepherd, carpenter, blacksmith, stonemason, basket weaver, baker, butcher. Barter between neighbouring villages was common. The existence of the spring ('font') in La Juncosa was of great importance to the village.

It goes without saying that produce from the land still plays a starring role in the local kitchen. A good meal is not complete without Pan con Tomate. Every household prepares jars of olives each year for personal use. Winters are brightened up with Calçotadas, barbecue feasts of large spring onions with Romesco sauce and various types of meat. And on warm summer evenings, spontaneous street meals are organised with produce from the kitchen gardens.
Due to its location and the proximity of the limestone hills of El Montmell, the soil is very suitable for viticulture, which has been practised here for centuries. Read more about local wine.
The residents show their pride in their history every year at the Fira dels Oficis Tradicionals (each October), a showcase of traditional trades and activities with workshops such as bread baking, soap making, basket weaving, etc.
